Walster’s SPL S3 IM Power Rankings Week 1

Author: Walster, 07/13/20

Walster gives us his IM Division power rankings after the 1st week of action.

1. Carolina Smokers

Rationale

The Smokers were predicted to be the best team in the division by the vast majority of people and they delivered. They finished the first week of the season with 4 wins and 0 losses. Kacktus netted 34 goals in the first week. 34 GOALS IN 4 GAMES. 34 GOALS. Some people can’t even do that in a full 14 game season(IM gets 16 this season). He is on course to score around 180 goals. To put that into perspective, Panarin(92) and Walster(72) combined for 164 goals in the first season of competitive Slapshot(with more games in the season). Meatsale has the current record of 67 goals in SPL. Although IM doesnt count as a Major League, Kacktus’s predicted goal amount for this season would place him in 5th all time today. I don’t need to say anything else.

Area(s) of Concern

Besides a close match against the Barracudas, they haven’t really been tested this season. It will be interesting to see how they face off against a schedule full of the best teams in the division this week. Their defense will be put to the test this week.

2. Olympia Omegas

Rationale

Vorq and Kyler put up great numbers through 3 games. Their defense wasn’t tested too often with the only formidle team they faced being the baguettes(who I would say are a more defensively minded team than some of the other top teams). Vorq scored 21 goals and Kyler scored 16 which has put them both on track for some outrageous number of goals. I think that this team is an example of two guys who are pro skill level and can beat the bottom half of IM teams just due to raw skill and not accounting for tactics at all.

Area(s) of Concern

Their defense hasn’t been tested. Their third man may feel a lot of pressure when they face off against the Barracudas or Smokers.

3. Quebec Baguettes

Rationale

The Baguettes had a strong week with their only loss coming at the hands of a ruthless Omegas team. From watching that game, it seems as if they just had some unlucky defensive mishaps and they didn’t seem to be getting outplayed too heavily. I think that their loss came from within. This team can still make a challenge for a promotion slot if they manage to take the reverse fixture and steal some games from other top teams. Also, you never know when GaLzZy might pop out to aid in taking down a powerhouse like the Smokers. Renard put up a respectable 15 goals through 4 games  and his teammates were not far behind. This team doesn’t seem to have issues scoring.

Area(s) of Concern

They made a bit too many defensive errors. They will need to improve on how they cover passing lanes and rotate in order to account for a bad pass. It seemed to be their positioning that took them out of the Omegas game.

4. Midwest ShrimpRiders

Rationale

They had a flawless week. They conceded only 2.67 goals per game with the closest challenger being the Baguettes who conceded 4 goals per game. The duo of HighFlyer and Cape are off to a great start with all 23  of the team’s goals belonging to one of them. Both the Baguettes and ShrimpRiders showed their dominance against the bottomfeeder teams and whichever one can show their dominance against a top team will make the jump into the top 3. If they continue to play well and defeat the Baguettes this week, they will surely make a jump for the top 3 in next week’s rankings.

Area(s) of Concern

They have not faced a big team. If they are going to lose to a big team, it would be great to humble themselves earlier rather than later. This team doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon, but they face a tough set of teams in week 2. This is where HighFlyer and Cape can prove that their duo is ready to take things to the next level.

5. Baton Rouge Barracudas

Rationale

This team fell significantly from last week’s rankings. They had a poor week and could easily have fallen even further if the Ghoulz didn’t get smoked by the Smokers led by their head griller Kacktus. The Barracudas faced a tough Smokers team and lost by a single goal. In addition, they fell to a Ghoulz team that had an awful week aside from their win over the Barracudas. Fortunately, they blew out the Cows in their first match of the season and picked up an overtime loss point after their match vs the Ghoulz.

Area(s) of Concern

Donut scored 16 goals in the first week, but his strike partner EpicMan67 will need to add more goals to the table. Duker scored all of his goals in their routing of the Cows and EpicMan scored all but 2 of his goals in that game. While Donut was able to put up an average of 4 goals outside of that first win, his teammates only gave him 2 goals in total outside of that first win. I have high hopes for this team and think that they will bounce back this week. They have a rough week ahead of them in which they will go against 3 of the best teams in the division, so they will need to pick up the scoring ASAP in order to make their promotion hopes a reality.

6. Tokyo Ghoulz

Rationale

They had one win, albeit a close one, which placed them above all of the other teams that failed to find one this week. Nonetheless, this team will need to make some tactical changes if they wish to become more competitive. With their current performance, they will see themselves finishing in 6th or 7th. I’m sure their goal is promotion, so their current performance will need fixing ASAP.

Area(s) of Concern

Everywhere. They had a difficult week 1 schedule, so they don’t need to be concerned about relegation yet. The key word is yet.

7. Drumbo Cows

Rationale

The cows played some talented teams this week. While most of their games got out of hand, I see them as the team best equipped to win the matches against the other relegation sides in this division. So, I have to place them above the other winless teams at this moment.

Area(s) of Concern

They can’t seem to score too many goals. Being a defensive team that lets in a billion goals each match won’t allow them much success. This team needs to change their gameplan. If they don’t win their duels vs. the Yetis and Exotics this week, this team will be my favorite to take 9th and go to the relegation tournament.

8. Oklahoma Exotics

Rationale

This team seems lost. They lost their top goalscorer from last season which has put them in an even worse spot regarding their scoring. This team needs to win crucial games against other bottom 4 teams this week to have a chance at remaining in the division.

Area(s) of Concern

They need to score more. They need to play better defense. This team likely needs a reevaluation of roles. They should never have played Green at 3. They need to place each player in a favorable position according to their skillset.

9. Bangor Yetis

Rationale

The Yetis got demolished in each of their two games. They hardly scored any goals, averaging a measly 2 goals per game. I can’t see them leaving the relegation zone if they don’t win their matches vs the Cows and Exotics this week.

Area(s) of Concern

They need to score more goals. They need to concede less goals.
